Jamestown is the capital of the island of Saint Helena, and also the historic chief settlement. The town was founded when English colonists settled on the island in 1659, and it is the second-oldest British territory remaining after Bermuda. Jamestown has some examples of British Georgian-era colonial architecture and it is a candidate for a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some buildings are are built from local volcanic rock. St. James church is the oldest Anglican Church in the Southern hemisphere.
