Overview
Baltimore is a city situated in the in the state of Maryland on the eastern coast of the United States of America. The estimated population is about 640,000. Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland and serves as the state's major cultural and industrial center. The city is named after the founding landowner of the Maryland Colony, Lord Baltimore. Baltimore became the second leading port of entry to the United States during the 1800s. The city is a chief U.S. seaport, positioned closer to major Midwestern markets than any other key seaport on the East Coast. Baltimore Harbor is one of the best protected deepwater seaports in the world, with the Delmarva Peninsula shielding the area from hurricanes and tropical storms, and the Appalachian Mountains protecting the city from much of the winter cold that would freeze the harbor. After New York City, Baltimore was the second city in the United States to reach a population of 100,000.
Things To Do
Visit the Baltimore Museum of Art it was founded in 1914. It is positioned between the Charles Village and Remington neighborhoods, next to the Homewood campus of Johns Hopkins University, though the museum is an independent institution not affiliated with Hopkins. The highlight of the museum is the Cone Collection, works by Matisse, Picasso, Cezanne, Degas, Gauguin, and Renoir, brought together by Baltimore sisters Clarabelle and Etta Cone.

Take a historical trip to Fort McHenry. It is a star fort best known for its role in the War of 1812, when it defended Baltimore Harbor from an attack by the British navy in Chesapeake Bay. It was during this assault of the fort that Francis Scott Key was moved to write The Star-Spangled Banner, the poem that would ultimately be turned into the national anthem of the United States.

Or stop in to see the National Aquarium in Baltimore. This place is a public aquarium located in the historic Inner Harbor area of Baltimore. It was opened in 1981 and was built during the urban renewal of Baltimore. The aquarium has an annual attendance of over 1.5 million. Everyone comes to see its collection of 10,000 specimens of 550 different species. Particular attractions include the dolphin display, and multiple-story shark tanks.
