Overview
New Orleans is a chief United States port city and historically the biggest city in the U.S. state of Louisiana. New Orleans is named after the historical Duke of Orleans, Regent of France and is one of the oldest and largely historic cities in the United States. New Orleans is a Southern city known for its multicultural heritage as well as its music and cuisine. It is a world-famous tourist destination thanks to its many festivals and celebrations; the most noteworthy annual events are Mardi Gras. Once the fourth largest city in the United States, New Orleans's population was at 484,674 before the hurricane now about 110,000. New Orleans remains a chief port city due to its location near the Gulf of Mexico and along the Mississippi River, making it a focal point for goods which travel to and from Latin America. The city suffered from the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina, which made landfall on August 29, 2005 on the Louisiana/Mississippi state line near the city. New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin issued a mandatory evacuation of the entire city, the first such order ever issued in New Orleans. Prognosis of the city's eventual population following reconstruction are very rough.
Things To Do
New Orleans is bursting with culture even after Hurricane Katrina they showed true resilience and that following February they had Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras is the New Orleans Carnival with roots in Catholic ritual, starts on Twelfth Night. The season of parades, and king cake parties begins on that date. From about two weeks before, until Fat Tuesday, there is at least one major parade each day. The biggest and most elaborate parades take place the last five days of the season. In the final week of Carnival many events large and small occur throughout New Orleans and surrounding communities. This is the biggest event in New Orleans every year.

New Orleans also has Jazz Fest, Essence Festival, Voodoo Fest, Southern Decadence, and college football's Sugar Bowl. All these events are held every year so when you visit you probably will be able to catch one.
