Philadelphia is the fifth most populous city in the United States. With an
estimated population of 1,500,000 residents. Philadelphia is one of the oldest
and most historically noteworthy cities in the United States. During part of the
18th century, the city was the second capital and most populous city of the
United States. At that time, it eclipsed Boston and New York City in political
and social magnitude, with Benjamin Franklin playing an remarkable role in
Philadelphia's rise. In 1976, Philadelphia was one of the participating cities
in the United States Bicentennial observances that took place nationwide. The
city's name means "brotherly love" in Greek. The citys forte today is
its great energy, supported by history, strong cultural establishments and an
exciting new downtown convention center.
Things to Do
No visitor should leave here without discovering "Americas most historic
square mile," which covers a meager four blocks just west of the Delaware River.
But it's home to such important monuments such as the famed Liberty Bell, Independence
Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was prepared and signed, the Congress
Hall, first seat of the new United States Congress; Carpenters Hall, where the
delegates of the first Continental Congress met and aired their criticisms
against the English king; and the Old City Hall, home to the U.S. Supreme Court
from 1791 until 1800.
Take a trip to some of Philadelphia's historic and traditional museums, such
as Mutter Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Franklin Institute Science Museum,
Rosenbach Museum, and Please Touch Museum.
