Overview

St. Thomas is an island in the Caribbean, located east of Puerto Rico, and is part of the US Virgin Islands, along with St. John and St. Croix. It is one of the busiest ports in the world and not far from downtown Charlotte Amalie. A tropical paradise, known for its mountains, pristine beaches, and warm, sunny weather, St. Thomas is the most cosmopolitan of the islands. Activities range from ziplining, to site-seeing at an old pirate fort, from excellent shopping, to great night life, there is something for every type of vacationer.

Things to Do

Iconic Neighborhoods

  • Charlotte Amalie- The only town on St. Thomas, its Main Street is lined by the best shops and is home to the farmers market on Market Square where homegrown produce is sold. Head to Emancipation Gardens and Fort Christian for some history, then walk to Kongens Gade and climb up the stone steps to Government House sitting atop the hill for great views of the city and port.
  • Frenchtown- Originally settled by French immigrants from St. Barth’s looking for economic opportunities, its unique identity is different from the rest of the island. Visitors can watch the fishing boats along the shore, bar hop at many popular hotspots, and indulge the senses at numerous restaurants, from the relaxed to the gourmet. Take a tasting tour of the craft brewery, visit the Quetel Fish Market for fresh catch of the day, and go to the French Heritage Museum for local history.

Activities

  • Head up to Drake’s Seat which offers panoramic views of Magens Bay below and the British Virgin Islands across the way. It is said that the explorer Sir Francis Drake watched his ships from the here. Then make the trip back down for a day of relaxing in the tropical paradise of Magens Bay and simply enjoy the soft sand, gorgeous views, and calm waters. One of the most beautiful beaches in the world, it also a sheltered bay and a great place for snorkel enthusiasts and swimmers alike. Move further down the beach away from the facilities and concessions to avoid the crowds.
  • Hop on a ferry from either Cruz Bay or Red Hook and head to St. John where very few cruise ships dock and the more-secluded island gives travelers a break from the crowds. This island is the least crowded and over 2/3 of it is a national park. For truly picturesque beaches head to Trunk Bay or Cinnamon Bay to enjoy sailing, snorkeling, diving, kayaking, paddleboarding, and scuba diving. There are also numerous hiking trails and historical landmarks to explore for those who are more adventurous. Before leaving, stop in one of the boutique shops at Cruz Bay for a stylish, handmade hat or keepsake.

Family Friendly

  • For a less beach-centric day, take the kids to Coral World Ocean Park for a fun-filled day of exploring. The Undersea Observatory Tower is right offshore and is 3 stories, going 15 feet underwater and allows visitors to stay dry while observing underwater life without needing scuba diving lessons first. Kids will get to learn about different types of coral and fish from one of the guides as well as watch a diver during daily feedings. Sea lion and turtle encounters are also available for those who want to get up close and personal with sea life.
  • Within walking distance from the Havensight cruise terminal, kids will love the Pirates Treasure Museum. They will get a hands-on experience with interactive exhibits that share the history and treasures of the ocean. See shipwreck artifacts from around the world and those right there in the Virgin Islands. Kids can step into hurricane simulators and then try their hand at virtually steering a ship through a hurricane, enjoy the virtual reality flying experience on ZEUS to explore shipwrecks, and climb around on ships at the pirate encounter.
