This rare transcontinental city straddles Europe and Asia and welcomes visitors at the Port of Istanbul. Step off your cruise ship and into a world teeming with heritage. Don't miss exploring iconic landmarks such as the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar, an enthralling marketplace that delights every sense.
  • Constanta, Romania: Sail along to Constanta, the oldest continually inhabited city in Romania. The city's large port heralds your arrival to this historic haven. Here, the ancient ruins of Tomis speak of Roman times, and the ornate Constanta Casino stands as a testament to the city's more recent past. Every street and square has a story to tell.
  • Odessa, Ukraine: Your cruise may next take you to the "Pearl of the Black Sea," Odesa. As you disembark at the city's cruise terminal, you're just a short journey away from its heart. The Potemkin Stairs offer a remarkable view and a slice of cinematic history, while the Odesa Archaeological Museum opens a window into the region's diverse past, enriching your understanding of the Black Sea's saga.
  • Sochi, Russia: Finally, the modern port of Sochi, known around the globe for hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics, greets you with its warm, subtropical climate. Beyond the port, the city entices explorers with natural wonders like the picturesque Agura waterfalls. Venture a bit further to encounter the Western Caucasus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and experience wilderness in its purest form.
  • Hagia Sophia (Istanbul, Turkey): Once a church, later a mosque, and now a museum, the Hagia Sophia has stood the test of time and history, marking one of the greatest architectural feats of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. Its colossal dome and stunning mosaics narrate stories of Istanbul's diverse cultural past.
  • Yalta (Crimean Peninsula, Ukraine): Famous for the Yalta Conference of 1945, this resort town on the Crimean coast presents a rich historical journey. The Livadia Palace, with its white walls and ornate decor, is where leaders of the Allied forces once discussed Europe's post-war reorganization.
  • Sumela Monastery (Trabzon, Turkey): Perched on the cliffs of the Alt?ndere Valley, this stunning Greek Orthodox monastery is a sight to behold. The journey there is a hiker's paradise, and the frescoes inside the monastery, as well as the panoramic view outside, are simply breathtaking.

Black Sea Cruises Travel Tips

  • Be aware that some of the cuisines, such as those using a lot of pig parts, might not be appealing to you.
  • Unlike the U.S., smoking is allowed in bars and restaurants so you might eat your lunch or dinner amidst clouds of cigarette or cigar smoke.
  • Black Sea cruises require a passport with at least six months on it. Group visas required by individual countries are organized by the cruise line; individual visas are needed to enter Russia and Turkey. Immigration clearance for all ports is arranged by the cruise line as well.
  • You may require a landing card to go ashore in some ports; you will be issued such a card onboard your cruise ship by custom officials.
  • Safety is paramount. While cruises are generally secure, when you're on shore excursions, it's smart to stay alert, stick to tourist areas, and follow your guide's instructions. Keeping a mix of currency - both local and international (like Euros or US dollars) - could be advantageous for spontaneous purchases or gratuities.
  • Plan to arrive early (up to two days before your cruise ship departs is suggested); this allows you to adjust to any time change and accommodate for the long flight from the U.S. to your departure site, which is often Athens, Greece.
  • The Black Sea touches diverse countries, each with its own unique customs and regulations. Respecting local traditions is key, so a bit of research on your destinations can go a long way. Also, basic phrases in the local languages of the countries you're visiting can warm hearts and open doors, making interactions smoother.
  • The weather around the Black Sea can vary, so layering options are essential. Think light tees, sweaters, and a waterproof jacket. Don't forget comfortable footwear for those onshore exploring days and possibly a dressier option for the ship's evening events. Swimwear is a must for beach stops or the pool deck, and for sunny days, sun protection like a hat and sunscreen is crucial.
  • Appropriate attire is respectful when visiting religious sites (e.g., headscarves for women, no shorts for men in orthodox churches), so include a few modest pieces.

Black Sea Cruise Packages

Quick Facts

The Black Sea, a marvelous intersection of natural wonders and historical realms, offers a treasure trove of attractions that promise to enchant every traveler. Whether it's the architectural marvels, ancient cities, or natural landscapes, there's a piece of history or a moment of awe waiting at every port.

  • Getting There

The Black Sea, a scenic marvel, is nestled between Southeastern Europe and Western Asia, surrounded by six countries, each with its unique ports welcoming international travelers. Reaching these tranquil waters is an adventure in itself, often starting with a journey to one of the region's gateway cities like Istanbul, Odessa, or Varna. Numerous cruise lines initiate their voyages from here, offering passengers a smooth transition from land to sea.

Cruise ships navigate through the Bosphorus Strait, a natural channel connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Black Sea, unveiling a world where the East meets the West. This strategic route isn't just about geography; it's your passage through history, marking the beginning of an exploration of diverse cultures, ancient ruins, and vibrant coastal towns that dot the Black Sea's shores.

  • The Perfect Time for a Black Sea Cruise

Embarking on a Black Sea cruise offers a unique journey through history and stunning landscapes, and selecting the right time for your cruise is essential for an optimal experience. Cruising the Black Sea between June and August is ideal for those who enjoy warm weather and outdoor activities. These summer months are filled with plenty of sunshine, with temperatures often reaching a comfortable 27°C (80°F), perfect for cruising enthusiasts who love beach outings or exploring ancient ruins along the coast.

For cruisers who prefer a calmer voyage, the shoulder months of May and September are an excellent choice. Cruising during these months means you'll still enjoy pleasant weather, albeit a bit cooler, making it ideal for spending time on the deck or going on shore excursions. Additionally, major tourist spots are less crowded during these periods, allowing for a more leisurely exploration of the Black Sea's rich cultural and historical sites. Cruising in the off-peak season often comes with the added benefits of reduced fares and promotional offers, making your cruise both budget-friendly and enjoyable.

While winters are generally mild in the Black Sea region, cruising during the colder months is less common. Shorter days and unpredictable weather conditions can limit your sightseeing opportunities. Therefore, aiming for the warmth and vibrancy of the peak and shoulder seasons is recommended to fully appreciate the charm and beauty of cruising the Black Sea. These seasons provide the perfect balance of pleasant weather and engaging experiences, ensuring your cruise is memorable and enriching.

What sets a Black Sea cruise apart is the exclusive access it provides. The itinerary includes ports that are often unreachable by road, revealing the hidden beauty of secluded spots and offering unique shore excursions that immerse you in the local culture. More than just a visit, each stop is a deep dive into a cultural mosaic, spanning the diverse traditions of Turkey, Bulgaria, Russia, and beyond.

  • Experience the Flavors of the Black Sea

Setting sail on a Black Sea cruise isn't just a feast for the eyes; it's a journey for the taste buds, too! The region is a melting pot of flavors, reflecting various cultural influences over centuries. Each port brings a chance to dive into a culinary adventure, so here's a little appetizer of what awaits.

One can't speak of Black Sea cuisine without mentioning the mouthwatering seafood. From simple, freshly caught fish in Turkey to elaborate seafood platters in Bulgaria, it's a pescatarian's paradise. For a unique treat, try the traditional Ukrainian "Borscht" or savor the rich "Sarma" (stuffed grape leaves) often found in Romania.

Thirsty? The Black Sea region's burgeoning wine scene is not to be overlooked. Local vineyards are producing some truly distinctive varieties. Don't miss a chance to taste the local wines, particularly in Georgia, known for its ancient winemaking tradition.

As for where to enjoy these delights, seaside taverns, and local eateries in port cities usually offer the most authentic experiences. They're where you'll find the locals — and traditionally, where the food is best. Often, your cruise might organize shore excursions that include meals or restaurant visits, which can be a great way to ensure you're tasting the best the region has to offer.

Remember, part of the adventure is discovery, so don't be afraid to try something new. Each dish tells a story of the sea and the lands that surround it. Enjoy the journey, plate by plate!

  • Immerse Yourself in the Black Sea Culture

Oh, the stories the Black Sea whispers through its ports! Each stop on your cruise unveils a tapestry of culture, brimming with customs and celebrations that date back centuries.

Imagine stepping off your cruise ship and straight into a festival! The region is rich in color and tradition, with events like the Kaliakra Music Festival in Bulgaria, where the universal language of music bridges any communication gap. Turkey's vibrant Nasreddin Hodja Festival is another cultural extravaganza, tickling your funny bone while teaching invaluable lessons through satire and humor.

The Black Sea isn't just about festivities; it's about a lifestyle that cherishes hospitality. From the Georgian supra (feast) that symbolizes friendship and kinship to the serene monasteries of Romania that offer peace and reflection, you're treated not just as a tourist but as a guest of honor.

And let's talk about diversity! The region harmoniously blends countless cultures. Orthodox churches, ancient ruins, and Ottoman landmarks stand as testaments to a crossroad of civilizations. This cultural immersion is what truly anchors your experiences in each port of call, making a Black Sea cruise not just a trip but a journey through living history.
