Trieste Cruises
Overview
The Port of Trieste is located on the eastern side of Italy and borders the Adriatic Sea and Slovenia. It is the least quintessentially Italian town, and has more in common with Eastern Europe than Italy. Picturesque and once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Trieste is a multicultural and metropolitan city with a unique blend of Italian and Eastern European cultures and famous for its coffee. The seaport boasts the Piazza Unita d’Italia, which is the largest seaside square in Europe, as well as beach resorts, historical cafes, Viennese coffee houses, museums, castles, and even ancient ruins.
Things to Do
Iconic Neighborhoods
- Downtown- This area is the home of the major waterfront area and the heart of historic downtown. Visitors can find the Piazza Unita d’Italia here, enjoy views of the Adriatic Sea and grab a coffee or snack and people watch. The square is surrounded by 18th and 19th century buildings, including the Palazzo del Municipio, or Town Hall. Wander the medieval streets and tour through the old churches, museums, and shops.
- Borgo Teresiano (New Town)- A long , wide canal runs through this neighborhood- a second downtown and commercial hub around which daily life revolves in the city. A community took shape around the 18th century under rule of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria-Hungary, and many buildings were constructed in the neoclassical style. Tourists can see the historic Serbian Orthodox Chiesa San Spiridione Taumaturgo next to the Catholic Chiesa di Sant’Antonio Taumaturgo, an example of the religious and cultural melting pot that characterizes the area. Also a haven for many authors in the early 20th century, a statue of James Joyce decorates the Via Roma Bridge. Take a stroll along the canal and visit one of the many coffee shops that line the waterway.

Activities
- Interested in ancient history? Tour through the Museo Civico di Storia e Arte in the Palace of San Giusto. Their many exhibits display Roman, Egyptian, Mayan, Greek, Etruscan artifacts and a Lapidary Garden holds reliefs and inscriptions along with Greek and Roman statues. Don’t miss the Giardino del Capitano, with sculptures, tombstones and inscriptions from the Medieval period.
- Book a day trip wine tour to any of the numerous vineyards in the Prosecco region. People here have been producing prosecco for over three centuries and is a deeply ingrained part of the culture. The grapes are grown among the numerous high hills in the region and has been dubbed a UNESCO world heritage site. A couple of areas have gained notoriety in recent years for their wine quality. They are Conegliano and Valdobiaddene and the road that runs between them is called Prosecco Road. Visit a couple of venues and savor the white Italian wine with fruity and floral notes while gazing out at the lush countryside.
Family Friendly
- Head over to Castle Miramare, a 19th century castle commissioned by Archduke Maximilian of Austria. With fantastic views of the Gulf Of Trieste, it is a unique example of Romance Architecture with its white-washed walls, ridiculous crenellations, and overly sumptuous decorations- it looks like a fairytale castle. The entire estate is surrounded by 50 acres of English and Italian style gardens. Visitors can explore the inside of the castle, then take their time ambling through the relaxing park with rare plants, sculptures and ponds, and enjoy the view. Sit for a short break at Caffe Massimiliano and sip on Italian espresso or grab a small snack.
- Just about 10 miles away, enjoy the landscape of the Karst which is a limestone plateau and well known for its cave systems. Visit La Grotta Gigante, one of the most interesting centers where tourism, environment, and scientific research are mixed. The cave is 128,898,533 cubic feet and the largest in Europe. Take a tour down to 328 feet below the surface and see amazing rock formations. Then visit the educational center and the Speleological Scientific Museum where kids can enjoy learning about the cave systems through interactive exhibits and take climbing lessons on the climbing wall outside with experienced staff.
