Overview

Yangon, with a population 4 million, is the largest city of Myanmar. The city is located at the convergence of the Yangon and Bago Rivers, and is about 19 miles away from the Gulf of Martaban. In November 2005 the military junta began relocating the capital to Naypyidaw, Mandalay Division. As compared to other major cities in Southeast Asia, Yangon is relatively undeveloped. Construction is booming however, mostly through foreign investments (from Singapore and China). Many multi-storied residential and commercial buildings have been reconstructed or remodeled throughout Downtown and the Greater Yangon areas.

Things to Do

A great place to visit is Shwedagon Pagoda, which is a Buddhist shrine that was built over 2000 years ago. Two half lion and half dragon statues protect the southern entrance. The base of the stupa is made of gold plated bricks. The crown is studded with 5,448 diamonds and 2,317 rubies. A very stunning structure that cannot be passed up.

Ngwe Saung is a beautiful beach where you can take advantage of swimming, snorkeling, or just basking in the sun. The perfect weather and ocean breezes make this an ideal place to relax.
