Overview

La Paz meaning "peace" is the capital of Southern Baja California in Mexico. Located on the shore of the Bay of La Paz in the Sea of Cortez, it is the second major city on the Baja Peninsula and has a population of about 250,000. La Paz preserves the charm a small Mexican town. A magnitude of Baja's most attractive islands lie just a short distance offshore. Hernán Cortés stopped at La Paz in 1535, but no permanent settlement was established until 1811. The city was, known for its pearl fishing, and La Paz was often referred to as "The City of Pearls". The humidity in Baja is relatively low with daily high temperatures infrequently exceeding the low 80's. La Paz is also a major center of ecotourism, because of its closeness to the whale safe haven at Magdalena Bay and to desert areas where mysterious animals and plants may be found.
