Overview

Lipari Isola Lipari, Italy is the largest of the Aeolian Islands, in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the north coast of Sicily, and also the island's main town. It has just about 10,000 residents. Lipari is the biggest of a chain of seven islands in a volcanic archipelago that overlap the gap between Vesuvius and Etna. It is accepted that the island was formed by a succession of four volcanic movements in early B.C.. Charles V had his Spanish subjects replenish the island and build the enormous city walls atop the walls of the ancient Greek acropolis in 1556. The walls produced a potent fortress which still stands to this day.
