Overview

Nuuk is the capital and biggest city of the self-governing Danish territory of Greenland. The city was founded in 1721 by the Norwegian missionary Hans Egede. However, the site has a long history of inhabitation by Viking explorers in the 10th century and thereafter, by Inuit peoples later and by Inuits and Danes today. The city is generally known as Godthab in Danish, although since home rule was ratified in 1979, the official name of the city is its Greenlandic name of Nuuk. Nuuk has a population of about 14,500.

Things to Do

There is a huge mountain that everyone who visits Nuuk must see. Visit the Sermitsiaq Mountain, it is a popular destination for visitors.

Take a trip to the Greenland National Museum. You can take a look at the group of women and children who were thought to have died in about 1477 when their boat capsized at Greenland National Museum, one of the major sites is Nuuk.

Or if you go in March you might be able to attend the annual Snow Sculpture Festival, held in Nuuk. At the museum you will see some amazing sculptures which look almost unearthly.
