Visby is the largest city on the Swedish island of Gotland with a population of about 23,000, and is the best-preserved medieval town in Scandinavia. Visby has also become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Of its history, the most notable objects are the two and a half mile long stone wall called "Ringmuren" that encircles the city, and the old church ruins. The name "Visby" comes from the Old Norse Vi, meaning sacrificial place.
In August the
tourist season is at its peak. In week 32 from
Sunday to Sunday the annual Medieval Week is
held. During this time regularly dressed
tourists are outnumbered by people dressed in
Medieval costumes. The festival started in 1984
and there are a variety of events such as
music, jesters, theater, a medieval market,
jousting tournaments and much more. A great
place with a lot of energy.
The Visby port is also another place with a lot
of night life. The port is always crowded in the
summer months. People and boats wherever you
look. There is always something happening here
at the ports such as parties, performances, or
just people gathering to have a good time.
