Overview

Qaqortoq means "the white one". The town was founded in 1775. Qaqortoq has an estimated population of more than 3,400 inhabitants, that makes it the largest town in South Greenland. About 3,200 of the residents live in the town itself, while the rest live in the three surrounding settlements, either at the reindeer farms or at the sheep farms. There are two main companies in Qaqortoq, Great Greenland purchases sealskins, which they tan and sew into some of the world's most desirable furs, and Royal Greenland keeps freezers stocked with shrimps. The town square with Greenland's oldest fountain is located close to the harbor where the fishermen turn up every day to sell the day's catch. The square is surrounded by some of the most well-preserved buildings from the colonial era, the oldest of which was built over 200 years ago. Several of these buildings still play an important role in the town's daily life where the old and new thrive side by side.
