Overview

Goa is India's second smallest state in terms of area after Delhi and the fourth smallest in terms of population after Sikkim, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh. Portuguese merchants first landed in Goa in the 15th century, but colonized it soon after. The Portuguese colony survived for about 450 years, until it was annexed by India in 1961. Internationally popular for its beaches, Goa is visited by thousands of foreign and domestic tourists each year, and has become one of the most trendy holiday destinations for European travelers. Besides beaches, Goa is also recognized for its world heritage architecture including the Bom Jesus Basilica. Goa also has rich flora and fauna.

Things to Do

The most widespread celebrations in Goa are the Shigmo festival and the Carnival. However the celebrations of the Shigmo and Carnival have transferred to the urban centers, and in current times these festivals are seen more as a method of attracting tourists. Celebrations for all festivals usually last for a few days and consist of parties, balls, and more.

Another fun thing to do in Goa is to shop. There is an abundant choice of shops and stalls selling clothes, jewelry and handicrafts from all over India. Some of the great buys are gold, leather and silk. They also have the weekly flea market in Anjuna, it is well worth a visit.
