Overview

Beppu is a city located in Oita, Kyushu, Japan. The city has an estimated population of 130,000 residents. The city was founded on April 1, 1924 and is renowned for its thousands of hot springs, which are viewed as hallowed. Beppu is Japan's hot springs capital, containing nine major hot springs, which are sometimes referred to as the "nine hells of Beppu". Beppu is thought of as a tourist town by the Japanese and is rather scenic. Like many other Japanese cities, Beppu is packed in between the sea and the mountains. The combination of sea, mountains and hot springs makes Beppu an ideal location for a summer vacation or even a weekend break from the city. Beppu has been undergoing a revitalization. The city financially supported the creation of the Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, an international university which focuses on International Relations and Business. The university draws students from over 70 countries, making it the most culturally diverse university in Japan.

Things to Do

Beppu's top sight is the  nine hells, colorful volcanic pits of boiling water and mud, and one geyser. The jigoku are too hot to be diluted into hot spring, and they emerge at various temperatures from 122 to 210 °F. Some of the jigoku are very stinky!
