Bari is the capital of the prefecture of Bari and of the Apulia region, on the Adriatic Sea, in Italy. It is the second economic center of southern Italy and is recognized as a port and university city, as well as "the city of Santa Klaus". The city itself has an estimated population of 320,000. In Roman times it was the point of interchange between the coast road and the Via Traiana; there was also a branch road to Tarentum from Barium. Its harbor, mentioned as early as 181 BC, was most likely the principal one of the district in ancient times, as at present, and was the center of a fishery village.
The Basilica of San Nicola was founded in 1087 to obtain the relics of this saint, which were brought from Myra in Lycia, and now lie beneath the altar in the crypt. The church is one of the four Palatine churches of Apulia, the others are the cathedrals of Acquaviva and Altamura, and the church of Monte Sant'Angelo sul Gargano.
The Fiera del Levante was founded in 1930 by the Municipal Authorities and has sustained its activities ever since. As a whole, the Italian and foreign exhibitors present at the scheduled events amount to over 5,000, while the number of visitors is close to two million.
