Overview

Since ancient times, the Port of Kobe, had interchanges with ports of the Chinese continent and Korean peninsula. During the Heian period the port had been developed as a base for international trade. Particularly during the Edo period, under the policy of national isolation, the Port of Kobe played a major role as a key center of domestic trade. After its opening in 1868, the Port extended and enhanced its facilities, thus growing into one of the leading ports of the world. After the great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995 destroyed the port seriously, Port of Kobe has recovered its facilities in the 11 years since.
