Helgoland is a German Archipelago located in the North Sea. Helgoland was formerly called heyligeland, or "holy land", probably because of the association with the god Forseti. The presence of red Sedimentary rock in the German Bight is unusual, making the island of Heligoland a geological oddity. Helgoland was used as a naval base throughout the 20th Century. Today it is a holiday resort, and a research and rescue center.
