Overview

The island of Jersey is located in the Bay of Mont St. Michel, 14 miles from the west coast of France and 100 miles south of Great Britain. It is the largest of the Channel Islands, measuring ten miles by six miles, and is divided into 12 electoral districts known as parishes. The capital town is St. Helier. The permanent population of Jersey is about 90,000. It has also forged and retained an identity that is resolutely its own: mainland France is clearly visible from the east coast shoreline, and many of the place names are French, yet Jersey is still a part of the British Isles. The outdoors is a big attraction and walking and cycle paths abound, but for those who like their entertainment a little more pre-packaged, a number of well-maintained museums and tourist attractions are on hand to keep both adults and kids engaged. Perhaps Jersey’s most famed tourist attraction is its zoo Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust. Placed in acres of grounds, this facility’s conservation work has earned it global acclamation. Of the island’s castles, Elizabeth Castle and Mont Orgueil Castle are the most extravagant. The large Jersey War Tunnels, the underground complex which was built by slave labor during wartime occupation, are extraordinary: vast and eerie.
