Overview

The town of Loreto, Mexico was founded in 1697, by Jesuit priest and explorer Juan Maria de Salvatierra. It was from Loreto that Father Junipero Serra launched the 18th century voyage that led to the establishment of multiple California missions that stretch north all the way to San Francisco. Loreto served as capital to “Baja” California for 133 years, until the capital was moved to La Paz, allowing Loreto to remain the serene village it is today. Thirty years ago, Mexico's tourism development agency, identified Loreto and four other destinations in Mexico as having the maximum potential for tourism. Since then, the others such as Cancun and Los Cabos have become trendy destinations for tourists from all over the world. Loreto is the last of the five to be built-up, but this time with a distinct approach, one that respects its history and allows it to hold on to all of its original charm and character.
