Marseille is the second largest city in France. Marseille has a population of about 1,000,000 residents. It is France's largest commercial port and the largest in the Mediterranean. In 1934 Alexander I of Yugoslavia arrived at the port to meet with the French foreign minister Louis Barthou. He was assassinated there by Vlada Georgieff. Marseilles' harbor is the largest in the country, and one of the most important of the Mediterranean Sea. In the bay fronting Marseille are a number of islands, including the islet of If, site of the 16th-century Chteau dIf, featured in Alexander Dumass romance The Count of Monte Cristo. numerous forts guard the harbor, and on a high strip of land projecting west into the bay is the 19th-century church of Notre Dame de la Garde.

Things to Do

If you are in Marseille you have to go to the Chteau d'If. It was built in 1524, after a period of abandonment, became a state prison in the 17th century. Made legendary by Dumas' "The Count of Monte Cristo," this castle lay claim to towers and a drawbridge.

Another favorite Marseille attraction is Le Pouce it is a bronze sculpture that was created in 1989.
