Overview

Oranjestad is the capital and chief city of Aruba located on the southern coast near the western end of the island. The town was built around Fort Zoutman, shortly after it was built in 1796 and Oranjestad has been the capital of Aruba since. The fort is still one of the town's main attractions, others being the tax-free harbor and the Willem III Tower, located near the fort. Oranjestad has an estimated population of 37,000 residents. Along the wharf, fisherman come to sell fish and produce right off the boats every morning. All of Aruba’s government buildings and main offices are located in the capital city.
