Overview

Port Chalmers is the key port of the city of Dunedin, New Zealand. Port Chalmers has an estimated population of 3,000 residents. Most of Port Chalmers is located on a hilly peninsula, at the northern end of which is a reclaimed area which is now the site of Dunedin's container port. Close to the southeastern shore of this peninsula are a pair of islands, which are located across the harbor between Port Chalmers and the Otago Peninsula. These two islands are Saint Martin Island and Goat Island. Most of Port Chalmers' economic activity centers on the container terminal. Fishing, of historic significance, is now only a small part of the economy. The creative arts are also important to the town's economy; Port Chalmers and the surrounding suburbs of Careys Bay, Roseneath and Sawyers Bay have a successful arts community, and the town is deemed as a haven for alternative life stylers.

Things to Do

Visit the Port Chalmers Museum on Beach Street. Its exhibits include Union Steam Ship Company memorabilia, builder's models and artifacts from sail and steam eras, and from the shipping and fishing industries. This collection reflects the most important industries near the port.

Or you can go horseback riding. Take a trip to Hare Hill, this ranch has over 60 acres located near Deborah Bay that is perfect for this activity.
