Overview

Almeria is the capital of the province of Almeria in Spain. It has an estimated population of 180,000 residents. It is located in southeastern Spain on the Mediterranean Sea and all its area is a vital Mediterranean resort. The city was founded in 955 as a principal harbor in this extensive domain, to strengthen the countries Mediterranean defenses against Fatimid in Tunisia. In this period, the port city of Almeria reached its historical peak, after the fragmentation of the Caliphate of Cordoba, under powerful local Muslim like Jairan, the first independent Emir of Almeria and Cartagena and Almotacin the poet emir, both courageous warriors but also consumers of the arts.

Things to Do

Visit the fortress alcazaba. Which is a Moorish fortification in Spain. The word derives from the Arabic word casbaha walled-fortification in a city. This particular alcazaba in Almeria is one of the few remaining of these fortifications.
