Overview

A couple of minutes away from the capital of Peru is the main seaport of Callao. Callao is located west of Lima, the country's capital, and is part of the Lima Metropolitan Area. Callao is built on and around a peninsula which includes a large naval base. Callao is also home to the principal airport, Jorge Chavez International Airport where most visitors arrive and then head to Lima.

  • For the history of Callao visit the Fortaleza Real Felipe, a fort built to protect Lima and the port from pirates and other invaders.
  • Callao Monumental extends all over the historic center of this port. It tells the story of Callao through urban art around the city and showcases Peruvian culture with murals, galleries, and films.

  • Off the coast of Peru are the Palomino Islands. You can observe sea lions sunbathing on the rocks and diving into the water as well as penguins and other wildlife that live on the island.
